Settling velocity
The equation comes from a force balance on a layer of settling suspension using Kozeny’s expression for hydraulic permeability for the liquid drag term. The Kozeny constant is often assumed to be 5 for packed beds.
Our experience is that it is really a variable dependent upon the material itself and the solid concentration.
